FAQS

Things we know about Melbourne timber windows

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS:

Does the timber under the metal profiles still rot?
No, once you stop the water from penetrating into the timber, it then can dry out and remain together. That is why we use the COLORBOND product, it doesn't allow water, moisture, sun or birds to penetrate through it, our profiles offer structural integrity back to the window frame again once they are neatly and exactly fitted.

What is dry damp?
Dry damp is more common in older houses where there is little or no sub floor ventilation, moisture in the air is around 10-15% so the floorboards, skirting’s and architraves sometimes have a fungus like growth on them and the rooms smell musty. Even though these timbers are not wet, the moisture content in the air has a rotting effect on the timbers.

Once the metal profiles have been fitted, will it look the same as before?
Yes, our measurements are very accurate to the existing style of the window and once finished, it remains a seamless match to the existing window.

Do I have to paint the metal profiles?
You don't have to paint the Zincalume, it can be left in the mill finish if that's the look your after.

If you want to paint the Zincalume profiles, it just requires a very fine sand, wipe the surfaces down with a rag dipped in turpentine, then apply 3 coats of low sheen or gloss acrylic. If the window is profiled in Bluescope COLORBOND, then it does not have to be painted, the surfaces just need to be wiped over with detergent and warm water every 6 months.

If I want to paint the Zincalume myself (client), do I have to do anything special?
Apart from the above preparation, paint the glass in at least 6mm when cutting in. This is to finish off creating the seal to the glass, when dry use a sharp blade to slice and remove the excess for a professional finish.

If the glass is broken, how does the glass get replaced?
The same way as before: New glass is ordered, the metal profiled glazing beads are removed with the timber beads and the broken glass replaced, re-instate the timber beads and fit new metal glazing bead profiles over the top all to be installed by NEWFORM technicians with the option of going through insurance. If the glass is broken on a sash, the glass is replaced from the inside, with new trims, filler and paint to finish.

Does the paint crack; blister or peel off like it does on timber surfaces?
NO, if the Zincalume surfaces are prepared as above, the paint will only fade over time, the only maintenance is to keep the paint to the surfaces.
OR, profiled in COLORBOND....... NO-MORE PAINTING REQUIRED and when you clean your glass, you just wipe the excess water from the COLORBOND surface to reveal a brand new looking window again!
